Labor Commits to Modern Classification Reform

The Skilled Respected Equal campaign has achieved a major step forward.

The Albanese Labor Government has committed to supporting our call for a modern, fit-for-purpose classification structure in the social, community, and disability services sector.

If re-elected, Labor has pledged to fund a workforce project led by key stakeholders, including the Australian Services Union (ASU), to begin rewriting the outdated classification structure. This is a crucial move toward creating a system that truly recognises the skill, experience, and professionalism of our sector’s workforce.

Why This Matters

Right now, the classification system doesn’t reflect the complexity or value of the work done across our sector. It fails to capture the real contributions of the people who support some of the most vulnerable in our communities.

With this commitment:

  • The work to rewrite the classification structure can begin

  • Workers will have a stronger voice in shaping a system that works for them

  • Recognition and respect will be built into the foundation of the sector

Meanwhile, the Coalition has made no commitments to uplift wages, improve conditions, or support a modern classification structure for our workforce.

This is a direct result of collective advocacy and the power of workers coming together to demand better. It’s a major win—but it’s not the end.

Stay Involved

Our campaign is only getting stronger. Make sure you:

  • Share this news with your coworkers and networks

  • Join the ASU and stay up to date on what’s next

Together, we’re building a sector where workers are Skilled Respected Equal.

What Happens Next?

This commitment is not a finished product. If Labor is re-elected, we’ll begin the hard but vital work of building a classification system that values the work you do.
We’ll continue campaigning to ensure this promise is delivered — and that the new classification structure truly reflects the skill, experience, and contribution of our workforce.
